Viking Wooden Animal Carving

Viking Wooden Animal Carving

While on my trip to Oslo, we had some down time and took a ferry over to Bygdøy and spent a few hours at the Viking Ship Museum. When you stop and think, the first permanent English settlement in North America was Jamestown, Virgina in 1607 and these ships may have predated Jamestown by 600+ years. Hell, my ancestors from Germany didn’t settle in the Pennsylvania area until the late 1600’s it does make your head swim a bit …

As far as the museum goes, it was horribly lit for photography… (although it looked amazing in person!). Also there was mass confusion on the part of the guards as to if Tripods were allowed (with or without a permit – or if permits existed… one said I needed a free permit to use a tripod, no one knew how to obtain it though) or if a Monopod would be ok (no- its NOT a “selfie stick” For Faen Skyld (Google Translate may fail on that…)).

I did manage to snap a few good shots, which I needed to clean up a LOT in Lightroom and on1 Perfect Photo Suite. This one is of a wooden animal carving from one of  the burial ships. It was in a glass case, so I had to play around a bunch to remove the case, the reflections of the person who seemed to jump in front of all my photos, and some odd glare from the lights through the thick glass – Quick Masks in on1 Perfect Effects, a bit of HDR and some background textures – Voilà!
